(710) AP Art and Design
Open to grades 10, 11, and 12
Prerequisites: Visual Art Foundations or CAPP 101 Elements of Art AND 1 of the following: Portfolio Prep: 2D Design and Photography, Portfolio Prep: Drawing and Painting, Advanced Ceramics or Advanced Computer Imagery & Animation). Prerequisites may be taken concurrently, and the artwork from those classes may be used in the AP portfolio.
The AP Art and Design program consists of three different courses and AP Portfolio Exams—AP 2D Art and Design, AP 3D Art and Design, and AP Drawing—corresponding to college and university foundations courses. Students may choose to submit any or all of the AP Portfolio Exams. Students create a portfolio of work to demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year. Portfolios include works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. Students submit portfolios for evaluation based on specific criteria, which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas and sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision, guided by questions. Sustained investigations and research are student driven and topics could align to any career pathway with an emphasis for all students in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications career pathway.
Students may earn college credit by successfully submitting their portfolio to the National Advanced Placement College Board with their approval. A fee is charged for portfolio submission. Advanced Placement Art and Design may be taken multiple times for high school credit. Both Portfolio Prep courses or advanced 3D courses must be completed or taken concurrently to take AP Art and Design a second or third time. Each year a student may select one of the three portfolio options to submit, and may receive additional college credit for each portfolio submitted.
